Can snoring damage your relationships?

Unfortunately, yes. Snoring does tend to damage relationships if nothing is done about it. There’s only so long a person can go without sleep, or with interrupted sleep, before they become irritable and crabby. It sounds like your poor wife is nearing her breaking point.

If you’re asking yourself how do I stop snoring, there are several things you can do about your problem, which may help you and your family to get more restful sleep.

First, take some time to analyze your sleeping space and habits. Do you sleep with your head lowered or elevated? Do you sleep on your side or on your back? If a particular sleeping position seems to make you snore more loudly or severely, solving your problem may be as simple as changing the side you sleep on.

If you’ve recently changed pillows or positions, the new change may be causing increased snoring. Ask your bed partner if they’ve noticed that you snore more in specific situations, then work with them to adjust your sleeping environment. If you’re troubled by persistent, loud snoring, consider making some basic environmental changes, and then have yourself evaluated for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

Seasonal allergies, a cold, or anything else that obstructs your breathing may also cause loud snoring. If you suffer from any of these medical issues on a regular basis, over the counter or prescription medication may alleviate the issue.

Decongestants may loosen up obstructions in the nasal cavity and sinuses, leading to decreased snoring. If your sinuses are inflamed due to seasonal allergies or an allergy to something in your home, such as dust mites, an antihistamine may help reduce snoring as a symptom. Adding pillow and mattress protectors and washing your sheets frequently in hot water is another good way to cut down on allergens in the bedroom.

If you try making basic environmental changes, and your snoring still continues, you may need to seek medical advice. A sleep disorder known as sleep apnea can lead to interrupted breathing during the night. One main symptom of this disorder is loud snoring. If you have other markers for the disease, such as feeling tired during the day, feeling like you never get enough rest, and waking frequently during the night, it may be a wise idea to have a sleep study done.

If your doctor diagnoses you with sleep apnea, you’ll likely be fitted with a CPAP machine. This device controls the flow of air through your nose and throat during the night, keeping them at a continuous level of pressure. This helps keep your airway open and regulates your breathing, so that you are able to get a restful night’s sleep. In addition, you’ll find that your snoring is almost completely alleviated.

It’s very difficult to snore while wearing a properly fitted CPAP mask. A major issue with CPAP though is that it may feel bulky and uncomfortable to wear so many patients entirely discontinue using it after struggling for days or weeks. If this is your case, you may look at more comfortable, but not less effective solution, such as a jaw supporter. You’re definitely going to see the improvement in comfort level compared to CPAP, and your snoring will be completely eliminated or substantially reduced.

If you have sleep apnea, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel after having the disorder diagnosed and treated. After all, the disease causes you to wake up hundreds of times per night, making it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep. Once you’re receiving treatment and able to rest, you’ll wonder how you ever existed before. Everyone in your home will be able to sleep better and rest easier afterward – including you!
